TITLE: ASEAN Voices
CAT# (YEAR COMPOSED): 100 (2017)
INSTRUMENTATION: erhu and 10 mixed ASEAN ensemble players
DURATION (APPROX): 8’48
PREMIERE: Premiered by C asean Consonant (an ASEAN traditional ensemble), during the 2017 China-ASEAN Music Week at the Guangxi University of the Arts on May 27, 2017. The conductor was Knote KnocKnote with erhu soloist Hu Liu.
NOTE: The composition ASEAN Voices is closely connected with my recent erhu solo, “Imitating the Vivacity of the Human Voice”. In ASEAN Voices, the erhu takes the role of soloist while the ensemble serves to comment and reflect upon the material of the solo. However, the commentary is unusual through the use of many contemporary sound production techniques that are featured in this piece.
