TITLE: Balkan Dances
CAT# (YEAR COMPOSED): 78 (2008)
INSTRUMENTATION: recorder quartet
DURATION (APPROX): 5’11
PUBLICATION: PRB Productions
PREMIERE PERFORMANCE: Quartet New Generation in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, September 27, 2008
This piece was a commission by Küng Blockflöten for a light and fun piece for a birthday celebration.
It is based on three melodies from Eastern Europe (Pajduska, Geamparaua, Hijaz). Of moderate difficulty, it requires a variety of phrasing and good ensemble. It may also be played an octave lower on TBCbFsub recorders.
The music is tonal and firmly within well-known musical styles. One of the few instances of Gebrauchsmusik in my catalogue. This does not signal a changing of my compositional intention – merely an isolated aberration.
